[Canon]: Mass Effect
[Age]: 27
[Gender]: Female
[Canon Point]: Beginning of ME3, en route to Mars
[History]:
The wiki, for when you want more information than you need.
[Personality]:
"Soft" probably isn't the first word someone would think of to describe Ashley, and she seems to prefer it that way. On the outside she’s a no-nonsense hardass- short-tempered, aggressive and brutally honest. She has the ability to be a leader, but she’s not likely to be someone’s first pick for a diplomat.
Speaking of not being a diplomat, Ash was initially distrustful and a little disdainful of aliens. She’s largely moved past it by the canon point I’m taking her from, but this app would feel incomplete without mentioning it. It’s related to her family history: the Williams name carried something of a political curse due to her grandfather surrendering to turian forces, and Ash might have been trying not to look too much like an “alien sympathizer”. Even during the first game though, she avoided letting her misgivings about other species get in the way of her duty, and worked well with the aliens on Shepard’s crew.
Practical and decisive, she can act without hesitation even in a rough situation (like, say, possibly having to shoot down a former ally who’s threatening the commander.) Feeling like she has to be “better than the best” to make up for the aforementioned family stigma, she’s very dedicated to her job. And she’s a determined, born survivor- when the rest of her unit was killed on Eden Prime, she didn’t give up or run, but kept fighting despite the overwhelming odds.
Despite her outward confidence, she sometimes doubts herself; she works her ass off to get what she wants but doesn’t quite feel like she deserves it, as she confesses to Shepard if romanced. She blamed herself for the loss of her unit at Eden Prime, and took Kaidan’s death on Virmire hard, stating that it should have been her since he was the superior officer and a biotic.
Ash puts up a tough front, but she’s somewhat of a romantic at heart, not to mention kind of a poetry geek (particularly fond of Tennyson.) She’s one of the only party members to mention being religious, although it’s not something she makes a big deal of. Her family means the world to her, and she would go to great lengths to clear their name- something which working with Shepard seems to have done.
Finally, she definitely has a sense of humor, if a biting, snarky one, and a sense of fun- she's not all hardass all the time.
[Abilities / Strengths & Weaknesses]:
+ Ash doesn’t have any unusual powers, but she is a career
+ She has a knack for leadership.
+ She’s a natural survivor- not just in terms of physical resilience, but raw determination. If I recall correctly, a comment is made in the third game to the tune of how she would have kept fighting to defend Eden Prime by herself if Shepard hadn’t shown up.
- She can be harsh and untrusting.
- She’s a bit hard on herself.
[Limited Powers]: N/A
[Other Important Facts]:
Mass Effect is a Bioware RPG, and thus player choices influence events during the storyline (notably, who lives or dies.) For Ash’s “home” universe, I’m assuming:
- Shepard is female.
- Wrex survived Virmire, and everyone survived the suicide mission (makes it easier to interact with anyone that might join the game!)
Inventory on arrival: At the point she's taken from, she’d probably have her armor, a couple guns and a standard-issue omni-tool (the latter of which would be much less useful in a low-tech setting) on her person. I’m open to having any of these be left behind or damaged, and the guns have a limited amount of “ammo” in the form of disposable heat sinks.

This all still feels like a crazy dream. Or one of those historical reenactions – I keep expecting to turn the corner and find a guy trying to sell me “Visit Historic Pirate Village!” shirts.
But seriously. If the name “SSV Normandy” means anything to you, write back as soon as possible. We should probably stick together, at least until we find out what the hell is going on.
[She’d prefer a less open method of communication for that, but what else can you do? Her suit radio’s been dead since she got here.]
(edit 9/8/13: Canon point is actually going to be from halfway through the game, just after the coup attempt but before returning to the Normandy.)
